The big takeaway from this: "the 1918 flu originated in birds." That needs to get to main stream media to repeat over and over again, until government officials take this seriously.

Excellent, thoughtful, and informative article. I'm currently reading "The Great Influenza," subtitle: 'The Epic Story of the Deadliest Plague in History' by John M. Barry. This is about the 1918 'Spanish Flu.' I highly commend this anyone who dares to learn how bad a novel or near novel Influenza can be. It's widely available used. I got mine on eBay for $4.78 plus tax. (I'm in the USA.)

You are so right on the fact that schools and other institutions should (have) concentrated on air cleaning tech, which would serve for future possible pandemics as well as the current haze from Canadian fires.

I hadn't seen this and I can use good news - thanks! Being a good doomer though, I sure will be skeptical that we will be capable of doing what we need to do...

Excellent article with so much relevant information. Yet--past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior.

I spent 4.5 hours one morning in June trying to find a new primary care doctor in Tucson, with major medical insurance in hand. No one was taking new patients...almost no one at all until December or January '24? And, oh, we have no county hospital. Sold to a private hospital network. If we can't supply enough GPs in this country, I'm sure we can't figure out how to manufacture PPE here for the next pandemic. Lean capitalism detests any kind of long game with a public interest, unless the federal government is the client. If it's bombs, sure. Oh, and Trump shut down our Pandemic Preparedness Team. God help us...

They knew about coronaviruses long before COVID came along, and we were caught flat-footed. It’s reassuring that we may have some protection, but judging by the way they mishandled COVID, I don’t have much faith that we will be ready for anything else coming down the pike.

What we can expect to hear from Bobby Kennedy Jr.:

"First of all, there's no such thing as 'bird flu' and if there was, it's probably not any worse than the common cold. All this nonsense about another pandemic based on a 'bird flu' is just another way for the libs to get us injected with dangerous so-called vaccines that the lib scientists will use to control the population and increased their control of America.

"What it's really about is globalization, because a weak, sick America is much easier to take over than a strong, truly conservative, Jesus-loving, patriotic and free America, which can withstand anything.

"We already have enough information about the harm vaccinations have done to our children, causing autism, and life-long mental and physical problems, to know that if they work at all, it's to destroy our kids, our citizens and our country. Masks don't stop anyone from getting sick, because the sickness is injected into us with a syringe, and stopping gatherings of Americans stops us from getting organized to fight back.

"So know the truth, and make sure you have semi-automatic long guns and plenty of ammo, and vote for me for President in 2024."

Not signed (yet) by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Scary huh? But we've heard it all before and it's all a load of bullshit.

It's exhausting. Sometimes it feels like we're sentries in the tower watching for the next assault on our position. We don't know where it's coming from but we know it's coming.

Bird flu has decimated poultry populations and wild birds as well. I didn't realize we're genetically protected from it, so thank you for that information. Even without knowing this, it's concerned us enough that we've stopped feeding wild birds this year.

I'm grateful for your reports from the lookout tower. Forewarned is forearmed.

Thanks for the heads up. Hopefully the right people are doing something about it.

I have managed to avoid Covid. However, living in Buffalo, NY, I have been breathing Canadian forest fires for days. Not complaining, 100 million of us are. Maybe that will reduce my resistance to H5N1. Gee, I'd hate to miss how the off the chart's ocean temperature rise is going to play out and see what the body count for Texas construction workers is going to be this summer. We have been abandoned.

I've been saying for decades that if humans don't get their population numbers down themselves, nature will do it for us. And it will be horrendous when it happens.
